What do you do when a $0.05 part breaks on your IKEA coffee table? Order a new one, right? Of course not! You learn how to use your favorite CAD software’s topology optimization package! The algorithm that is used by most of the CAD packages is called SIMP. The important thing to know is that…… Continue reading Over engineered Bracket

First CNC project
First project! A little shuttle-inspired spaceship carved from pine. CAD I whipped it up in Fusion 360 with the sub-d modeling environment. CAM I used Fusion’s built-in CAM package. Adaptive clearing pass (1/4″ flat endmill) Morphed spiral finishing pass (1/4″ ball endmill) Cutting Result
3d printed airplanes
I printed a batch of airplanes for co-workers. I spent a while trying to optimize the size without increasing printing time too much. Eventually I pitched it up 15 degrees and turned it diagonally. Here’s an earlier slice:
Dice shrine
I build some dice holders to improve my DnD game. I’d been making some bad rolls so I built these devices to give my D20s positive or negative feedback. Dice shrine (right) which charges up good luck.Where there is the carrot there must be the stick – if the dice performs poorly it goes in…… Continue reading Dice shrine
Crosscut sled
I have needed a crosscut sled for my table saw for quite a while. For example, I had to resort to this for a project: Please do not do this. It is low-precision and seems unsafe I got these Rockler tracks on sale (that I could have just made out of wood in retrospect). I…… Continue reading Crosscut sled
New CNC!
Got a new CNC! It’s a Shapeoko Pro XL
Epoxy drip catchers
I had a problem with resin and hardener dripping onto my workbench resin drippage I solved it with an overengineered dripcatcher
Sandpaper belt holder
Quick and dirty project. Ikea wire shelves plus grinder plus plywood. The belts take up much less space now.
Spray booth
I built a spray booth from this ventworks kit. I have had the parts forever and finally built the kit. I’ll do some painting when the weather gets nicer and I can leave the garage door open.
Garage shop
Over quarantine I’ve gotten into woodworking and built up a garage workshop. Shout out to Steve Ramsay’s youtube series on woodworking. I already had a nice little workbench I used for modelmaking and painting, and odd jobs: original workbench Now I have another workbench and a toolbench, as well as some important tools like table…… Continue reading Garage shop
